[much to his irritation, a patch of corrosion has taken root in his knee and started spreading. he hadn't even noticed until it had started eating away at enough of the joint to affect its workings, causing it to jam at innopportune times and creak angrily at others, and by that point...

well, it's too late to remove all of it, not without leaving holes behind. but if he can smooth it out a bit, keep it from spreading further... that will have to do.
