[food smells no longer have quite the same visceral effect as they once did - still pleasant, but no more appetizing than the scent of a rose, or a fragrant wood fire.

but this one, as Len clambers out of bed and opens his shutters to the night, does carry a certain nostalgic quality.]

[Len isn't the only one feeling nostalgic. the last time he had made pancakes had been before the accident, and he can't help but feel a little pang of loneliness as he deftly flips the one he's currently cooking over. ...he could probably get Dr. Kagamine's little robot in here to watch him, but it wouldn't be the same.

at least they'll taste good. and if he got the timing right... it'll be nice to eat breakfast (so to speak) with someone else.]

[wandering into the kitchen as he buttons up his shirt]

Good evening, Kaito. What's that you're cooking?

[success. flipping the pancake again for good measure (and to show off a little) before sliding it onto a plate to join the ones he'd already made]

Pancakes. ...Do you want some?

[pancakes. when was the last time he'd even had those? was it back in Germany? he wishes he hadn't gone out to the horse paddock last night. it's harder to feign appetite when he's so recently fed.

but for Kaito, and for pancakes, he's sure going to try.]

[he actually grins, a quick little here-and-gone thing mostly hidden by his hair and the slightly embarrassed way he ducks his head. sliding the serving plate in Dr. Kagamine's direction]

Help yourself, then. I'm almost done, so I'll join you in a moment.

[he just catches it, and grins in response. it's nice to see the boy happy.

just a pity they don't have any maple syrup. he'd always had a sweet tooth, and even now he can always go for a bit of sugar. ah, well. he serves himself a small stack and butters it.]

I can hardly remember the last time I had pancakes.

[sneaking himself a torn off bit of one of the finished pancakes while he waits on the last one]

Mmm... I haven't had them in a while, either. Should've done this sooner...

... mmm. it's nowhere near as satisfying as when he was human, but the taste reminds him of a childhood in Germany. he savors it.]

[starts digging into his own pancakes, all but radiating contentment. it's nice, being able to care for someone else. he'd missed it.

[he sags a little bit in relief. it's been far, far too long since he'd last gone; it had just been too painful, at first, and then by the time he'd actually wanted to he hadn't had the time or the money or both and it was just... shameful.

it's selfish. Dr. Kagamine has work, and doesn't even get up that early. he isn't family. Kaito shouldn't even be thinking about it.

[blinks in surprise, swallows his mouthful of pancake before answering]
