GOODBYE, KAITWO'S DIGNITY
Jun. 25th, 2012 02:31 pmMew. Mrrrrrew. ...Rrt?
[there are soft squeaking noises coming from one of the rooms Len uses for storing reference materials today. someone's enjoying herself!
except... the voice is slightly lower than Miku's. scratchier, without the almost bell-like tones hers has.
a peek into the room will actually reveal Kaitwo, rather than Miku. he's perched on a stool, taking notes on a pad of paper. there are a number of thick books left lying open around him on a small card table he's set up]

Jun. 22nd, 2012 09:12 am[much to his irritation, a patch of corrosion has taken root in his knee and started spreading. he hadn't even noticed until it had started eating away at enough of the joint to affect its workings, causing it to jam at innopportune times and creak angrily at others, and by that point...
well, it's too late to remove all of it, not without leaving holes behind. but if he can smooth it out a bit, keep it from spreading further... that will have to do.
that's how midafternoon finds him: sitting propped up against his beanbag, his leg held over a sheet of newspaper as grains of rust trickle slowly out of the offending joint with a soft patter]

Kagamine! It's Fuji. It's been a long time, hasn't it?
Listen, I can't talk about it over the phone, but I've made an incredible breakthrough! I'd heard you were recovering from some sort of illness, so I won't ask you to come see it - I'll bring it to you! I'm on my way up to Cerulean now!
I'm looking forward to seeing you again. It'll be just like old times!

Jun. 11th, 2012 04:58 pm[Kaitwo's rate of unaugmented recovery, it turns out, is excruciatingly slow. he's been bedridden for at least two weeks, although at least he's no longer relying on the painkillers anymore. he's started feeding himself, too. still, he has made it abundantly clear that he does not feel up to moving anywhere under his own power yet.
...which makes it all the more alarming when Len comes to check on him next, and finds nothing more than an empty bed.]

Jun. 10th, 2012 08:18 pm[he doesn't sleep often.
his body doesn't require it, not sustained by the power he hoards— in fact, is harmed by it, and the cessation of his control over his body's rejections. his mind was designed to be free of the need of something so frivolous. however... that design did not take into account warm, sunny days, or a slow recovery of his mental strength. so... today he sleeps, and in doing so, remembers.
rising bubbles. water currents. the murmur of voices— all of them familiar, but none of them beloved. a sense of loss. loneliness.
he has nothing. he is nothing. he drifts.]
...where am I...?
[the faint echo that escapes him is just that— more of a yearning, questioning restlessness than coherent words]

May. 14th, 2012 11:14 pm[It's a long shot, and he knows it. Reports of a shy, man-shaped mononoke in the town on the other side of the woods? There's too many ways it could be coincidence, or all just hot air.
but where could he have run on that first day, if not into the woods and away from humans? what if he just kept going, until he found a place to stay?
it feels too serendipitous to ignore. and that's why he's here in this small town.]

Feb. 28th, 2012 02:00 pm[Kaito's been needing to recharge more often lately.
that's worrying. batteries do wear out over time, especially with the high power demands of a sentient robot mind, but the ones Len uses for Kaito's main power supply have been tried and proven with many robots before, operating at a similar capacity. the battery life should be much longer than this - Kaito simply should not be running out of power this quickly.
it's not at all an insoluble problem. replacing the batteries is easy, and Kaito has redundant power supplies even in the case of an emergency. But he wants to know why Kaito's using up so much power lately.
that's why he's called his son into his lab today.]

Feb. 12th, 2012 09:23 pm[this isn't the first time she's made chocolate.
her first year, she hadn't been old enough yet to fully understand what was going on. she had heard "Valentine's day," and felt a jumble of things that had eventually solidified into "give the people you love chocolate," and while she had known what "love" was she hadn't yet learned that there were different kinds. that misunderstanding had ended in a large mess in the kitchen and nearly everyone who worked in the lab receiving chocolate that by some miracle was at least edible, if a bit squishy and far too sweet.
she hadn't made chocolate at all her second year or third year; somewhere after her first she'd learned the difference between giri-choco and honmei-choco, and when Valentine's rolled around again, she'd been too embarrassed by that first mistake to try and make either.
by the time she'd turned four, though, it had occurred to her that maybe, someday, there might be someone she'd want to make honmei-choco for, and that if she wanted to have any hope of her gift (or feelings) being returned she'd better not mess it up. so that year the entire staff got chocolate again, and if the people she loved best noticed that what she had given them was of somewhat higher quality than the rest, nobody said anything.
and now she's assembling all her ingredients again, the day before her fifth Valentine's day, and all she can think is I am so, so glad I practiced, because I was right.]

Feb. 7th, 2012 10:31 pm[that cute girl's still there.
her presence has become a regular thing at practice since she first showed up a few weeks ago. Mikuo hadn't noticed until a few days in, when Yokune missed a shot and the basketball had gone bouncing off to the sidelines - nearly colliding with the girl sitting under a nearby tree.
she hadn't said much of anything then, and had left a little while after - but she was back the next day. and the next.
"Who's that cute girl?" he'd asked Suiga later.
"You haven't heard? That's 'Kagamine's monster'," Suiga'd replied. he'd just shrugged when Mikuo had made a face at the epithet. "Didn't think she'd be a fan of basketball..."
but she kept coming, usually with a notebook of some kind, and would just sit there under the tree, watching them practice.
usually, though, she cleared out when they did. the others had all headed home - Mikuo had been the only one who stayed, wanting to practice his free throws. he'd expected her to be gone too, but...
well. no sense being rude!
he towels off quickly, and ambles over to the tree, ball tucked under his arm.]

Feb. 3rd, 2012 11:02 pm[it's been a long couple of years, without Kaito.
after the first decades of life, time seems to go faster - after the first century of immortality, mind still undulled by age, the world seems to rush by in a terrible hurry. A year or two could pass as nothing. even Len, for all that he loves this world, sometimes loses track of the swift flow of time.
but Kaito... Kaito had brought something precious into his life. he brought youth and vitality into a house that had come to feel cold and stagnant... he'd brought a human touch, companionship, and...
... family.
even before the illness, even before Len had made his offer, and Kaito his decision - Len had already come to think of Kaito as his son.
and when Kaito had left, cursing Len and the immortality Len had given him...
Len angles into a controlled descent, catching hold of a drainpipe on the side of a building. he's been flying for a long time, and the bat form can only take so much at a time, even with the strength of a vampire. resting his wings for a moment, he surveys his surroundings again.
the hospital isn't far, now. there, he's sure to find the girl who was bitten. he'd fumbled the first lead, the one with the old man - but this time, for sure, he will make it in time. he knows every vampire on Honshu, where they live and what they do, and the one behind this attack could only be the newest and youngest of them. the one he created.
he will find Kaito, this time.
letting go of the drainpipe, he takes flight again, speeding towards the hospital.]
