Because sometimes you love both the split personality and inner demons tropes way too much, and there's only one way to handle it.

THE AU IS RIDICULOUS, but all you really need to know is Kaito got humanity's malice dumped into his head along with ridiculous power, and his way of coping with both that and the trauma involved was to shove it all in with everything else he represses the heck out of and then completely dissociate himself from it. End result: what he thinks of as his inner monster has completely split off into a personality of its own, following the imagery and pattern left behind by the Shadow from that one time the Vocaloid Dressing Room had a Persona event.

(Please don't judge me.)

[ The last place Labrys expects to feel all her Shadow sensors screaming bloody murder at her is in the middle of a crowded street, but there's no denying it once she feels it (TARGET IN RANGE, TARGET IDENTIFIED AS SHADOW, TARGET IDENTIFIED AS SHADOW, TARGET--) and she comes to a clumsy halt, almost staggering as she does so.

For a moment, she has to turn in a dizzy circle to try and find the source and it's only when she spots the familiar golden gleam, that she comes to a stop.

This... isn't possible. For a moment, she's too stunned to do anything, even though all her sensors are still screeching in alarm, but she suddenly finds herself calling out -- ]

H--hey! Hey you! Big guy! Gold it right there!

[his head jerks up, startled, as he turns to look at her—]

[—and abruptly the light in his eyes gutters and goes out, leaving them a normal, human slate color.]

Ah— I'm sorry?

... I-- you--?

[ with the fading of the light in his eyes comes a sudden silence from all her sensors and she's even more puzzled now than she was before. Unless she'd been malfunctioning -- and she doesn't think she had been -- she had definitely sensed a Shadow and she'd definitely seen yellow eyes.

She fidgets for a moment, looking suddenly uncertain of herself. ]

... thought I... saw somethin'. In your eyes.

[damn it. he knew they should have just worn sunglasses, no matter how ill-fitting they were to what image he had...

his monster half doesn't care at all about being caught, of course, and is doing the mental equivalent of a cat sticking its paw under and door and pawing. he's got the hang of things enough that his eyes don't flicker in response to the attempts to grab control, but that's still probably enough to set Labrys' sensors off again in erratic little bursts.

the Shadow is still there, after all.]

Oh. They, ah— they tend to catch the light oddly. Due to a health condition.

[ it feels like a ping-pong ball ricocheting around in her head as her sensors flick on and on, screeching their confusion over the flickering presence of the Shadow. It certainly feels like a malfunction... but add in the golden eyes and she's fairly sure that it isn't. ]

Hafta be pretty odd to make 'em flash all yellow like that. Just what kinda health condition makes your eyes start shinin' gold in the middle of the day?

One that isn't any of your business.

[ she wants to grind her teeth in frustration but forces herself to stay as calm as she can. if the Shadow's really here, she'll get a proper fix on it soon -- all she has to do is delay him long enough to get confirmation. ]

Guess it isn't. But ya think you'd think ta wear sunglasses or somethin'. If it ain't anyone's business.

[well. the pinging is settling down, so...]

Oh, of course. Because it's my responsibility to keep other people from being impolite.

[ hm.

The cacophony from her sensors is finally starting to ease off and now she's not sure of how sure she is. Could it be that she'd seen the gleam of yellow eyes without really registering it -- and her sensors had jumped the gun?

... that's a mistake a human would make though. And as much as she'd like it to be otherwise, she's not human.

There's no way to confront him here -- not without risking some serious property damage and harm to the people around them. But she has to be sure. ]

Impolite is the least of yer problems.

[ ... ]

'specially when it feels like you got a Shadow creepin' around on your head.

[blinks—

and his eyes catch and blaze gold again as his other half takes advantage of his surprise to jump up like a very eager, very large dog (or more accurately, wolf) and shoulder him out of the way]

—You know what I am?

[...Shadow or not, he sounds less hostile than he did with normal eyes; if anything, he sounds... pleased? his overall body language has abruptly shifted to being more open, too]

[ and the alert comes slamming back onto her sensors, so abruptly that it actually makes her cringe a little and she fumbles internally for a moment before she finally manages to shut it off. She's too taken aback by the Shadow's response to even think about taking it on in combat.

It's a Shadow out in the TV world, without Hinokagutsuchi's influence to make the real world a more palatable environment for it -- a Shadow co-existing with its host in a way that shouldn't be possible for someone like him. ]

... y--yeah, I do. But -- I don't get it! How ya doin' that?!

[JUST

REALLY VISIBLY TRYING NOT TO START VIBRATING WITH EXCITEMENT be cool Kaito be c o o l]

Aah, well... by being kind of broken, mostly? ...It's a really long story...

[ she's stood here having a lucid conversation with a Shadow who doesn't seem to be about to bust its way out of his host's skull and go rampaging, who seems to be somehow co-existing with his host while still maintaining his own separate identity and Labrys is just as floored as she is absolutely terrified by the implications of that. ]

Yer... not a Persona. [ a statement, rather than a question. ] So, whaddya mean "broken"?

[wrinkles his nose a little at the word "Persona," like he hasn't heard it before, and then grins]

No, I'm not tame.

I mean traumatized, really. There were a lot of things my "fake self" [he says that almost like it's a joke] had to lock up, just to keep living without going insane, so he couldn't really accept that I was him all at once like that without it destroying him just as much as if I killed him myself. In the end, I got talked into being satisfied with just being acknowledged. ...Which I wasn't, but by that point I couldn't really do anything about it right away.

...The rest is where it starts getting really long, and also kind of crazy, so I probably shouldn't tell you all of it in the middle of the street. We were going to get ice cream; do you want to come with us?

[ this doesn't make sense. it goes against everything she knows about Shadows -- he shouldn't be this lucid, shouldn't even exist, but here he is with the suppressed cacophony of her sensors to prove it.

And he's offering her ice cream. ]

Uh... y--yeah.

[ she's too floored by all this to give a real response, so all she can really do is nod dumbly. ]

I want -- the whole story, yeah?

[he grins at her again— still honestly and openly pleased, but there's more than a little of that too intense, slightly unhinged edge that most Shadows seemed to have to it]

Mmm, of course. Do you really think a Shadow would want to leave anything about itself out?
