[it's a gorgeous day today! the sun is shining, birds are singing... all in all, the beautiful outdoors are more tempting than they've ever been (which is a good thing, considering the more... reclusive nature of a few of the musebox's inhabitants).

and that is why somebody has set up a gigantic picnic! there are foods of all kinds, from savory to the sweet... although, for some reason, one end of the blanket has been taken up almost entirely with different varieties of ice cream. how strange!

[ but despite then, she's grinning and she goes back to petting Dimwit before hugging him, putting her arms around the wolf's neck and ruffling the fur there as she does so. ]

[ she rolls her eyes and finally lets go of the wolf in her arms before standing up properly and brushing herself down. wolf hairs. so many wolf hairs. ]

They're not all over the kiddo like this, are they? They're big enough to knock her flying.

Nah, nah. Well— all over her, just because she's all over them, yeah, but they know well enough to be fucking gentle about it.

Pfft, like that's a surprise. I don't know a kid who wouldn't love the idea of being fussed over by a bunch of dumb wolves.

[ she pauses here, and pulls a face. ]

Does she really get the whole thing with you, Howl and the wolves, though? I mean, I know she gets that Howl is the wolves, but does she know about you?

...Not sure. I've sure as hell tried to explain, but she just sort of stared at me. Can't really blame her, but it made it pretty hard to tell just how much of it she got.

[ whoops, she's laughing a little. Sorry, Kai. ]

Yeah, I can't blame her either. I mean, hell, I barely understand it.

But whatever, at least it means she's not actually on her own when you're hooked up to Howl, right?

[ GIVING HIM HER STERNEST LOOK. you'd better make sure the tiny child has a wolf escort at all times, mister. ]

Hell, she's not really on her own even when I'm not, usually. Howl's pretty much glued Dimwit to her— Dimwit was one of the two with me when we got her off the Vulcan, so it recognized she'd find it familiar and kind of got in the habit.

[ she addresses Dimwit as she says this, ruffling his fur again before turning her face back up to Kai, her expression a little more serious. ]

Thing is though, now she's used to havin' the dogs around... how do you think she'll handle them not being around?

...About that. I... well, I think I might try and leave Dimwit with her.

[ for a moment, it doesn't really seem to click with Freddie that he actually did just say that, and she looks fairly nonplussed -- ]

I'm going to try and leave Dimwit with her. Howl's all for the idea, even if I'm not sure it understands all of what that would mean for it— for us.

[reaching out and ruffling the nearest wolf, pretty obviously for comfort]

...It wouldn't be me, or even Howl staying with her. But it'd be something.

Forget Howl, are you sure you know what you're doing? I mean -- shit, this is like lopping off one of your hands or something.

You get antsy enough going planetside, how are you going to feel leaving one of the wolves there? Would they even work without Howl being hooked up to them?

Fucking hell, Freddie, could you at least give me some fucking credit for having a goddamn brain? First of all, I wouldn't just do it without testing it first— and the wolves each have their own stripped-down version of Howl's AI on 'em, so it'd still work in theory, it'd just be stupider than usual. As for me—

...Well, it'd suck, but I've got five other wolves. More like losing a finger or two than an entire fucking hand.

[trulyis]

I am giving you credit, I'm just worried about you, you goddamn idiot!

[ shit she must be worried if she's actually admitting that. She does look a little startled by his response, but her expression quickly tightens back into something a little more carefully controlled. ]

You're hooked up to the dumb things night and day, you're constantly hopping in and out of them and -- fuck, I just don't want you going nuts because you feel like half your brain is missing, alright? I'm not trying to piss all over your parade.

[siegheulen]

[just. kind of growls, frustrated; it's echoed by one or two of the dogs]

Then trust me to know what the fuck I'm doing with them. I got enough to have extra when I first bought the pack, just in case something happened— I don't even use more than three or four at a time. Losing Dimwit won't hurt me, and if I really need to have that many extra sitting around to feel right I'll commission another one.

It won't be the same, sure, but in the end I won't be giving up anywhere near as much as Krista will be.
