[it's a gorgeous day today! the sun is shining, birds are singing... all in all, the beautiful outdoors are more tempting than they've ever been (which is a good thing, considering the more... reclusive nature of a few of the musebox's inhabitants).

and that is why somebody has set up a gigantic picnic! there are foods of all kinds, from savory to the sweet... although, for some reason, one end of the blanket has been taken up almost entirely with different varieties of ice cream. how strange!

but of course, she's munching her own food and watching with pretty open amusement. nothing is more entertaining than the kai and howl show.

she does start feeling bad when she realizes whoever set out this picnic probably hadn't expected there to be a pack of fucking wolves sticking their noses into everything, so it's entirely for that reason that she eventually calls out; ]

[they all look up, ears pricked, before trotting over and merging into a big furry swarm around her legs. enjoy having six wolves all jostling for the chance to kiss your hands and beg for pettings]

[ of course the fact that she's petting the wolves is the only thing stopping her from stuffing her own food into her mouth but it's not like he knows that. ]

...Better than I thought it would, actually. I still fuck up more often than not with my language, but she's a good kid, she knows that's rude as hell and she shouldn't be imitating it.

[ She raises her eyebrows, doing her best to look unimpressed, but there's a little smile on her face that makes her true feelings pretty obvious. ]

Huh, I'm pretty impressed. Not just anyone can raise a kid and -- hell, she's not exactly a normal kid, so it's even harder. But I guess you're doing a good job.

She's learning pretty fast though, it's kinda scary.

[he actually looks pretty relieved— it's still something he worries about, and if Freddie can say he's not doing a shit-awful job with a straight face he can probably calm down a bit.]

I guess? It's not like she'd gotten a chance to do any sort of practical learning stuck on that fucking space station— I'd be willing to bet half of it's making up for lost time and the other is just finally getting to apply some of the stuff they crammed into her without giving her context.

[ Freddie nods, and her face is suddenly a little more serious, as it always is when they end up talking about Krista. Just the thought of a kid -- a bright, cheery, innocent little kid like Krista -- being stuck in some cold, clinical place all alone makes her feel sick and angry in equal measure. ]

She's a pretty smart kid, so it's not that big a surprise, really. She's always asking questions, but they're always pretty smart questions -- and she's picking up English a lot faster than I've ever heard of a kid learning a language, especially since she speaks German on top of that.

[ which makes german-born freddie feel a bit ashamed for speaking tourist-level german at best.

... I don't know. I mean, we could go the homeschool route at this point— 's how I was schooled, so I've got some idea how to do it, but... well, for one, I'm nowhere near as learned as my da, so I'd only be good as a teacher up to a certain point, and for another even when I was homeschooled I was still getting playdates with other kids and shit. Kiddo needs socialized, bad, and that's not going to happen while she's stuck on my ship.

I see what you mean. She's a total chatterbox with you and Howl but the second someone else shows up, she just goes silent.

[ She makes a face, a sort of sympathetic 'oh no' kind of expression. She's very glad she's not the one who has to bring up the idea of staying planetbound to the kid. ]

Not in any sort of situation she liked. She has met da, so at least she'd know who she was staying with, but. Hnnngh.

I didn't think I'd ever even get close to regretting getting Howl, but here we are. Fuck me.

And she's gonna be on the planet for like, weeks or months at a time if she's gonna do any kind of formal schooling. I know it's something she needs to do but it still feels kinda cruel, doesn't it?

[ she has no idea how Kai can handle being hooked up to Howl like he is and not for the first time, she's glad she doesn't have the same problems. Yeah, the dogs were useful and everything but staying in space that long? She'd go nuts. ]
